On Graduate School and Water

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything of substance, so here you go. This is a bit deep and I’m still trying to process how to write a paper on water, but I had to get these out somewhere!

I’m doing an independent study this summer session about pharmaceuticals in the water. In doing the research for this project, I’m even more disturbed than I already was about what is allowed to happen in the environment.

A few thoughts that I have:

1. If you are allowed to use a new chemical in something that will eventually end up in the water system, you should have to have a method of getting it out of the water system as part of your environmental impact statement. (Which really should be required of any company, industry, individual who creates a chemical to be used in pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, pesticides, etc, etc, etc).

2. Why would industries WANT to continue to put their consumers in harms way? Is it just for the “efficiency” of the system? Why are they OK with putting endocrine disruptor in direct contact with animals and people?

3. I do love continuing my education, but it’s hard to keep seeing places that need so much help and not knowing how to make a significant impact. Being in nonprofit management and adding sustainability only really guarantees this will continue for my whole career! Guess I’ll have to get used to it, eh?
